Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes, but there’s good news: There’s a crystal to help ease every type — and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual imbalances that come with it.

As a highly sensitive person who’s a psychic medium to boot, I’ve experienced my fair share of anxiety throughout my life. Sometimes it’s my own beliefs that create this inner turmoil, and other times I’m picking up on the emotions of the people around me or those of the collective as a whole.

If you’re empathic, intuitive, or introverted, it can require consistent effort to maintain a semblance of calm in our nonstop, tech-connected world, where existing in a perpetual state of “busy-ness” and being glued to a smartphone is the norm. It’s no wonder that the National Institute of Mental Health found 19.1 percent of Americans (that’s more than 40 million people) to have reportedly experienced an anxiety disorder this year.

One thing is for sure: Each person’s anxiety looks different, and what an anxious state feels like can vary from day to day. Sometimes it’s a tolerable hum in the background, but sometimes the discomfort makes you want to crawl out of your skin.

Regardless, we’ve all been lost in our anxious thoughts and feelings — which, again, can range in severity and duration. Experiencing anxiety can feel like an almost out-of-body experience at times, catapulting us into a perceived future state where we’ve lost touch with the present moment, the bodies we’re in, and the ground beneath us. It can feel disorienting, never-ending, and even infuriating.

Restoring calm, both physically and psychologically, can require a toolbox of techniques — and crystals have been a tried-and-true standby among anxiety sufferers for good reason.

“We are holistic beings, meaning we are physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually multifaceted,” explains Adora Winquist, an author, alchemical healing expert, and founder of The Love Frequency, her yearlong Modern Alchemist certification program. “When we experience anxiety, we can feel shaky or disconnected. Crystals are an invitation for the whole of ourselves to reconnect with the healing powers of the Earth in a way that marries mindfulness and intention.”

Do Crystals Work for Anxiety?

Although crystal healing for anxiety doesn’t have much scientific backing, apart from studies attributing its efficacy to the placebo effect, crystal therapists like Michelle Melo continually find anecdotal evidence of gems playing a significant role in alleviating anxiety.

That’s because crystals, like everything else in our world, vibrate with energy, Melo says. “And just as each object has a unique vibration or ‘energy signature,’ so do the chakras, or energy centers, within our bodies. When a crystal is used for anxiety relief and interacts with our energetic body (as well as the energetic field around us), it helps restore balance and harmony where needed.”

Depending on how and where you experience anxiety in your body and your mind, there’s a crystal that can work alongside you to bring more tranquility and a sense of grounding into your life.

Melo notes that our sensitivity to these energies can vary — and some of us might feel these healing frequencies more strongly than others.

The whole purpose of working with crystals for healing is to use them to help fortify our energy field, Winquist adds. In doing so, they help strengthen and support our emotional resilience, which is essential for managing and preventing symptoms of anxiety.

It’s important to note that crystals shouldn’t replace medical or mental health services, says Alice Smith, an astrologer and crystal healer. “They can definitely help to enhance efforts to bring about peace and calm — and can be a great addition to both minor and major cases of anxiety when used in combination with treatment from licensed professionals.”

The Best Crystals for Anxiety

When choosing crystals for anxiety, the first step is to observe how and where you experience anxiety in your body, Winquist says. “For some of us, it’s like a full-on physical, almost shaking feeling. There’s a sense of ‘Where’s the Earth beneath my feet?’ Whereas others feel a sense of anxiety in their stomach and start to feel discomfort or nausea. Some people have headaches. My own anxiety sits in my chest, in my heart space.” (So does mine, by the way.)

As always, when choosing a crystal, let your gut be your guide. “There is a wide array of crystals that can work for anxiety, although I always recommend choosing the stone that resonates with you,” Melo says. “Sure, some stones possess the innate power to address general anxiety, but our personal anxieties may stem from specialized fears, stressors, or imbalances that defy easy identification. In these moments, let your intuition take the lead.”

With that in mind, here are our experts’ top picks for crystals for every flavor of anxiety.

1. Black Tourmaline

Chakra It’s Connected With: Root

Best For: When you feel shaky or dizzy

Why It Works: The energy of black tourmaline is particularly solid and grounding. “It’s a power source, helping us to cleanse and clear distortions we carry around being safe here, on Earth, and in our body,” Winquist shares. “It’s a great crystal to bring in that sense of connection to the Earth, where we can then receive the strength and support to be able to rebalance the nervous system.”

Other Benefits: Black tourmaline is known to provide EMF protection from your devices, Winquist notes. “And it’s great for individuals who tend to have anxiety because of some type of discord or disharmony in their relationship with the masculine stemming from their relationship with their father.”

2. Lithium Quartz

Chakras It’s Connected With: Solar plexus, heart

Best For: When you’re worrying nonstop and it’s causing physical symptoms, too

Why It Works: When working on rebalancing nervous energy and easing the physical symptoms of anxiety, this pink to lavender quartz type is at the top of the list, Melo says. “One of the most unique features of lithium quartz is its ability to help us navigate repressed emotions, especially anger.” This, in turn, allows us to identify the root cause of our stress and anxiety.

Other Benefits: According to Melo, it’s believed to deepen the connection to self and allow for a deeper understanding of the higher self.

3. Rose Quartz

Chakra It’s Connected With: Heart

Best For: When you’re feeling low self-worth

Why It Works: Rose quartz, in particular, encourages feelings of self-love and self-acceptance. “It’s one of the gentlest energies and helps to soften sharp emotions,” Smith tells us. “Rose quartz can be an incredibly healing and nurturing energy.”

Other Benefits: Melo thinks of rose quartz as a balm to the soul. “This stone is heart-centered and helps bring our softer and gentler parts to the forefront, she says. “It helps us lean into our own guidance while providing a foundation of compassion, love, and harmony."

4. Moonstone

Chakras It’s Connected With: Sacral and crown

Best For: When you need to feel comforted and soothed

Why It Works: Moonstone brings forth a soothing, calming nature to blanket erratic emotions, patterns of self-loathing, and feelings of unworthiness, Winquist tells us.

Other Benefits: Because moonstone carries the energy of the mother, according to Winquist, it can help heal unhealthy mother-child dynamics, which might include feelings of insecurity, competition, betrayal, jealousy, and/or a sense of disconnection and devaluation from the feminine.

5. Blue Chalcedony

Chakra It’s Connected With: Throat

Best For: When you’re feeling frustrated or angry

Why It Works: A member of the quartz family that’s closely linked with water, blue chalcedony is like cool water to hot tempers and heated emotions, allowing us to effortlessly transition into a calmer state when anxiety hits, Melo says.

Other Benefits: Because it’s connected to the throat chakra, which governs expression of our inner truth, blue chalcedony enables us to gain valuable insights and revelations of ourselves and our surroundings, Melo adds. “It can also help us to break unhealthy emotional patterns such as rage, fear, or anxiety.”

6. Celestite

Chakra It’s Connected With: Third eye

Best For: When you’re feeling disconnected from your higher self and/or having difficulty sleeping due to anxiety

Why It Works: This light blue crystal is wonderful for strengthening our connection to the ethereal and the immaterial realms, Smith says. Adds Winquist, “Celestite is really about being enveloped by the presence of the angels. It allows us a feeling of grace, which is so powerful for dissolving anxiety.”

Other Benefits: It can heal deep inner-child wounds. “I love to use the stone when working with children, or when I’m presented with a client who has anxiety that stems from childhood,” Winquist shares.

7. Fluorite

Chakra It’s Connected With: Crown

Best For: When you’re having tension headaches or feeling really stressed out

Why It Works: According to Winqust, the green and purple stone can make us feel more centered and empowered. “The green in fluorite can help us connect to the Earth, and the purple helps us to connect to the higher realms of divine consciousness, where we can really feel like we’re held and supported.”

Other Benefits: “One of the great gifts of fluorite is feeling that connection between above and below, between ourselves and the divine,” Winquist shares. “When we have anxiety, we’re always looking outside of ourselves for relief. But the true relief response comes from connecting within and hearing our own voice of wisdom and support.”

8. Citrine

Chakra It’s Connected With: Solar plexus

Best For: When you’re experiencing digestive issues, nausea, and/or lack of focus

Why It Works: “When we’re feeling anxious, and when our digestive system is being disrupted, we’re looking for something to lift us out of that pattern of distortion, right into the present moment, where we can come back into our body and connect with our breath,” Winquist says. “And citrine is so wonderfully uplifting in that manner.”

Other Benefits: Citrine is considered the joy bringer — and according to Winquist, it has the unique ability to meet you exactly where you are. “Anxiety robs our joy, and when we can come back into the alchemy of the present moment, then we have opened the doorway to the realm of potential, rich possibilities, and all the beauty that it holds.”

How to Use Healing Crystals for Anxiety

Although there are numerous recommendations for working with crystals for anxiety relief, the good news is that there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to use them.

What is important, however, is your intention and conscious engagement with your stone(s). It doesn’t matter whether you wear crystal jewelry, put your stone under your pillow, use it in meditation, place it on your physical body, or add it to your sanctuary space. It matters that you visit said space or consciously remember that it’s under your pillow and envision that healing energy enveloping you. “We are so adaptable as humans, and we tend to go back to our old patterns without a sacred practice,” Winquist says. “That’s why the tactile experience around crystals is so important.”

Smith shares a favorite simple ritual to incorporate into your day: “Hold onto the crystal you feel energetically drawn to, and practice intentional, deep breathing. Attune to the energy of the crystal with every breath, and ask it to align your energy with its properties. Then, carry the crystal with you throughout the day.”

Melo recommends deep breathing as you recite a positive affirmation such as “I release all fear”; “I am in control”; “With each breath I take, I am releasing stress and tension”; “I am loved and supported”; “I will get through this”; “I am not my thoughts”; or “I let go of worry.”

As to the best areas to place crystals for anxiety, Melo says ideal spots may include your bedroom, any room where you can unwind and relax, a dedicated meditation space, or even in areas where major stressors arise, such as your office or workplace.
