“If you’ve been struggling with fatigue, brain fog, strange skin reactions, or gut issues no one seems to solve, you’re not imagining it,” says holistic nutritionist and DailyOM course creator Lisa Kilgour. “We live in a world with higher toxin exposure than ever before, like pesticides, plastics, mold in buildings, microplastics in water, and heavy metals in soil and fish. Our bodies are incredible, but they’re simply not designed to handle this modern toxic load.”

The result? Toxic overload, which happens when the volume of toxins coming into your body outweighs your body’s ability to eliminate them. And Kilgour says it may be a culprit of your mystery symptoms.

But don’t worry, you’re never stuck — and detoxification from parasites, mold, and heavy metals is more than possible. Better yet, you can kill three birds with one stone, Kilgour notes. “A triple detox gives you a way to clear these hidden burdens and bring your body back into alignment with how it’s meant to function,” she says. Read on to learn more about its potential perks.

Meet Your Teacher: Lisa Kilgour

Lisa Kilgour is a registered holistic nutritionist, TEDx speaker, author, and educator with more than 15 years of experience helping people reconnect with their bodies and restore balance through food and lifestyle. Her philosophy is based on a term she lovingly refers to as “undieting.”

“Your body is not broken — it’s always speaking to you, and when you learn to listen, you can finally work with it instead of against it,” Kilgour says. “I love watching people move from frustration and mystery symptoms into clarity and freedom. Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone get their energy, mood, and spark for life back.”

What Is a Triple Detox?

According to Kilgour, “A triple detox means addressing mold, parasites, and heavy metals. These are the three ‘big disruptors’ that can silently drain your energy and keep you stuck in cycles of poor health.”

What’s more, these issues often overlap. “For example, mold weakens your immune system so parasites can thrive, and parasites can hold onto heavy metals,” she explains. “When you only target one, progress often stalls. But when you address all three (safely, and in the right order), you finally give your body a real chance to reset.”

It’s important to note that there isn’t much research that backs up the efficacy of the triple detox, though Kilgour says there’s strong scientific evidence supporting the damaging effects of mold toxicity, parasitic infections, and heavy metal exposure on the body. “And functional medicine has shown us that layering them together is often the missing key to long-term results,” she adds.

Breaking It Down: The 3 Components That a Triple Detox Addresses

  1. Mold. “Mold exposure can cause brain fog, fatigue, sinus issues, and even anxiety or depression,” Kilgour says. “Detoxing mold supports clearer thinking, better energy, and fewer unexplained inflammatory symptoms.” For example, a review of 19 studies found damp- and mold-affected housing was associated with poorer mental and emotional health. Other research linked mold inhalation in mice to both cognitive and emotional deficits, including decreased memory and increased anxiety.
  2. Parasites. These are more common than you think, Kilgour tells us. “Many of us are exposed through food, travel, and even pets,” she says. “Parasites can trigger sugar cravings, bloating, restless sleep, and nutrient deficiencies. Removing them often brings better digestion, calmer cravings, and more stable moods.” Although science does not yet support the efficacy of parasite cleansing, some research has demonstrated the detrimental effect of parasites on the body’s metabolic processes.
  3. Heavy Metals. This category includes mercury, lead, arsenic, and more in our environment, from old dental fillings to water to pesticides, which can affect the nervous system, thyroid, and immune function. Research has continually pointed to the damaging effects of heavy metals on the endocrine system. And Kilgour says that clearing them out may help to restore focus, hormone balance, and long-term cellular health.

What Else to Know About the Triple Detox

First and foremost, expect a highly individualized journey, especially considering that detox capacity is unique. “Genetics like MTHFR mutations can slow down methylation, making it harder to clear toxins,” Kilgour tells us. In other words, slowed methylation may reduce the body’s capacity to detoxify harmful substances. “Nutrient status, gut health, liver function, and stress levels also matter,” she adds.

To get the most out of a triple detox, Kilgour notes that prep work is key. “We don’t jump straight into detox. We build up the body’s pathways (bowel movements, liver, lymph, hydration) so toxins actually leave, instead of just circulating and making you feel worse,” she tells us.

And yes, you might experience some of the dreaded “detox symptoms,” but Kilgour says taking things slowly can help. “Along the way, you may notice temporary symptoms like fatigue, headaches, or mood changes, but with the right support — like hydration, binders, nutrient support — these can be gently managed.” She adds that tools like tracking and journaling can be helpful, allowing you to see your progress and patterns more clearly.

Lastly, don’t expect overnight results. “The process takes a few months, not days,” Kilgour points out. “And while most people [may] benefit, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or dealing with serious conditions should get medical clearance first.” Additionally, if you have any existing health concerns, you should always speak with your medical team before trying any new detoxification method on your own.

6 Reasons a Triple Detox Might Be the Well-Being Boost You Need

So, what makes the triple detox possibly pack such a powerful punch? “It lifts hidden burdens [in the body that] most people don’t even know they’re carrying,” Kilgour says. “Once those are gone, the body can finally do what it’s designed to do, like restore energy, balance, and vitality. It’s like clearing the static so your body’s natural signals can come through again.”

Read on for some of the potentially game-changing benefits of clearing parasites, heavy metals, and mold from your body.

1. It may level up your energy.

According to Kilgour, “Mold toxins, parasites, and heavy metals can all impair your mitochondria, which are the energy producers in your cells.”

But once those barriers are lowered, your body often makes energy more efficiently, she notes. “Many people notice they feel lighter, more resilient, and less weighed down by constant fatigue,” Kilgour says, based on her professional experience.

2. It may sharpen your cognitive processes.

Brain fog, poor focus, and memory lapses are common with mold, parasites, and heavy metal buildup, Kilgour tells us. “These toxins create inflammation in the nervous system and gut-brain connection,” she says.

In fact, one research questionnaire of nurses and midwives in Finland found that participants reported exposure to damp working conditions increased symptoms of fatigue and musculoskeletal pain related to the central and peripheral nervous system.

However, when you perform a supporting detox, like the triple detox, “it often feels like a cloud lifting, bringing sharper thinking, better recall, and more mental ease,” Kilgour says.

3. It may boost gut health — and reduce unwanted cravings.

Parasites disrupt digestion, mold alters the gut microbiome, and heavy metals might contribute to bloating, irregularity, and poor nutrient absorption, Kilgour explains.

“Clearing these stressors supports a calmer, more balanced gut. The result is often less bloating, steadier cravings, and more comfortable digestion,” she says.

4. It may help you feel more calm and emotionally balanced.

Per Kilgour, “Toxins influence the way neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine work, which can trigger mood swings, anxiety, or irritability.”

But “as you reduce that toxic load, the body’s chemistry naturally rebalances,” she adds. And after a triple detox, some people find they feel calmer, more emotionally steady, and less reactive.

5. It may support hormone health.

“Mold toxins can mimic or block hormones, while metals and parasites can interfere with the nutrients and signals your endocrine system relies on,” Kilgour says.

One clinical review highlighted that exposure to mycotoxins (toxic chemical substances produced by mold and certain fungi) disrupts hormonal balance by mimicking estrogen and other steroid hormones, leading to reproductive and cancer risks. According to the Cleveland Clinic, mycotoxins can cause short-term or long-term health concerns, including GI and cognition issues, and may increase your risk of asthma and cancer.

However, working with intentional detoxification methods may help. “As those stressors are reduced, your body has more space to recalibrate,” Kilgour explains. “This can support thyroid balance, steadier cycles, better sleep, and overall vitality.”

6. It may boost your immune resilience.

When your immune system is constantly battling toxins from mold, parasites, or metals, it can become either suppressed or overly reactive, Kilgour says.

“Reducing that burden allows it to reset into balance,” she says. “This often shows up as stronger resistance to infections and less reactivity to everyday triggers.”

The Bottom Line

There is no doubt that parasites, mold, and heavy metals can have serious consequences for our bodies — for our longevity and the quality of life we experience.

Taking steps to unburden our system has the potential to not only benefit our physical health, but our mental and emotional well-being, too. Just remember to speak with your doctor if you have specific health concerns before starting any detox, and if you get the green light, take it gently and slowly, because you deserve self-compassion in the process.
